With the growth of the tourism sector across the globe, it has emerged as one of the major career choices across different government and private run institutions across the country. Tourism as a career option has not only encourages one to pocket a good income but also pushes one to break new frontiers.

If one has the knack for traveling, sound knowledge of geography and a passion to learn new things tourism could well be the right career choice for him. Good communication skills and quality to pursue people is what one requires to excel in the field of tourism.

Tourism is one of the most appealing sectors of employment. The industry is the largest earner of foreign exchange and today the government sector, as well as the private sectors, are looking for skilled manpower to join the tourism industry not only to earn revenue but also to generate employment.

There are challenges in the tourism industry but it offers a pretty good salary to one with some added perks such as free travel, or reduced rates and your family. Salaries are higher for foreign-based companies or travel agencies.

After completing 12th one can join an undergraduate course for tourism. There are also institutes offering postgraduate degrees which can be helpful in getting into positions as managers or in administration. Some travel agencies offer short term training programme. One can also opt for vocational courses to get a B voc degree in tourism.

Apart from the degree, one needs to have good knowledge of the global culture, geography and knowledge about travel business. While managing a business you have to learn how to ensure customer satisfaction. A piece of strong knowledge of art and architecture, history, geography is always an added advantage. One of the most important thing is that he or she should know at least one foreign language apart from English to make a footprint in the travel and tourism industry. Apart from jobs, one can also plan for starting his or her own business or startup in the travel sector.

Good communication with presentation skill is of utmost importance in the tourism industry while an outgoing friendly personality who can handle people, fluency, and aptitude for language is an advantage.
